Joining hands in celebration, villagers mark their passage through this beautiful earth alongside exotic plants and animals. This trio of Madhubani paintings by Bharti Dayal is filled with energy and vitality. They are a tribute to the God Sun and the God Tree, givers and sustainers of life. Using vegetable colors on handmade paper, the celebrated artist creates an intricate world of warmth and beauty. Proud of her artistic heritage, Dayal follows in the steps of her mother and grandmother, creating works of art reminiscent of paintings found in the houses and temples of the past. Dayal comes from Mithila (Bihar), a scholastic and cultural center in ancient India that traces its artistic lineage from epic times. Madhubani paintings, alternately called Mithila, are a folk tradition kept alive by women in northern Bihar. They draw traditional designs and depict events from epic mythology on the floors and walls of their houses using crushed wet rice and natural colors on 100% cotton fabric. From this age old tradition stemmed the practice of drawing Mithila paintings on a canvas of handmade paper or pure mulberry silk fabric, using natural colors and fabric dyes. Brushes, sharpened reeds, and pen nibs are used to draw the designs. Dayal works with her associates with the intention of resurfacing traditional themes in Mithila paintings, while at the same time blending contemporary ideas. Today she is considered among the finest bearers of the Madhubani craft. Each painting arrives mounted on a mat, but no frame is included
