To paint a view of the world and human experience
reflecting a philosophy and a vision that could carry civilization to the threshold of enlightened thought -- a philosophy and a vision going beyond boundaries set by perspectives satisfied only within a three-dimensional set of standards; to paint, knowing that brush and color on canvas can offer profound awareness -- and even a glimpse of the future; to paint, opening the doors of perception to allow time and space to expand beyond, and into, the soul.
Through the years, my actions and thinking as an artist have not been separate from my actions and thought as an individual amid the daily interactions of life. Painting has been neither a decoration nor a technique for merely amusing myself. Instead, it has poured forth from my very existence. In the quest to be part of a balance, I have studied various philosophies. I have found to my own satisfaction, that balance is found by looking beyond the laws governing our so-called "acceptable" thoughts - "acceptable" in terms of evidence contrived by the simple human mind. I believe that the distractions of our daily routines shroud our minds from exploring itself. TV, work, games, and our busy schedules all contribute in blocking us from the most valuable and compelling quest of all -- imagination.
Painting throughout history has been both representative of the artist's time and place - and also visionary. Painting revealed new directions of how culture saw itself and the world around it. Today, with probes to outer space and with technology moving so fast, it is easy to say painting and art have lost their relevance - its place in the philosophy and vision for the future. But to me, it is still the answer. No technological device can feel the nerve of life. No device will unlock the mysteries which ten thousand years from now will be fact, only to be replaced again and again. The mystery of life is much like the mystery of painting, a balance between third dimensional expression as it encompasses all other dimensions, providing the vehicle of self awareness. But this is just the surface. In my painting, I explore different properties of life beyond the obvious. It is an effort to advance the most technologically advanced device of all -- the mind.
One day we will see things much different then we do today, My quest, in my being, thinking, and painting, is to go there, free from the safe and the known -- to charge into this realm where past, present, and future exist together, now.
Sincerely,
Brian Morrison
