Quite soon after he finished his training at the Royal Academy in The Hague in 1969, painter Frans Koppelaar (1943) choose a direction that was highly unusual in those years. Diametrically opposite to the ruling abstract expressionism he developed his innovative figurative style as early as the seventies and eighties. Owing to his progressive work, his positive attitude towards the great tradition of Dutch painting and his unique personal style Koppelaar gained much appreciation at home and abroad. He can be considered a forerunner of a new figurative movement in Modern Dutch Painting.
