Not Her Best, But Still Pretty Good
JUST WHITNEY showcases the songbird in a more old-school r&b setting with great results. Highlights of this set include the sassy "One of Those Days" (which creatively samples the Isley Brothers' "Between The Sheets"), the Missy Elliott-produced "Things You Say", "Unashamed", "Love That Man" (argubally the best dance song Whitney has done although it's too short at 3:28 ), and "My Love" (Bobby Brown's vocal is a pleasant surprise. Who'd have thought that he could sing with so much passion and soul!).
The album isn't perfect due to the inclusion of "You Light Up My Life" (do we really need another remake of that song?), and the whiny "Whatchulookinat". "Try It On My Own" and "Tell Me No" have good ideas, but they end up sounding like something from those "find-your-dream" movies of the 1980s (i.e. "Fame", "Flashdance")despite Whitney's always stellar vocal performances. And the album's brief time (39 minutes) leaves one wanting just a little bit more music (at least 49 to 50 minutes worth). Overall, the album deserves a solid "B" grade.
