Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
As a Sinatra-molded swinger, Harry Connick, Jr. may have had some of his thunder stolen by young star Michael Buble.
But with his raved-about performance on Broadway in Pajama Game and his continuing development as a jazz pianist, he's doing quite nicely, thank you.
Chanson du Vieux Carre is one of two new simultaneously released big band tributes to his hometown of New Orleans by him. Released on Marsalis Music,
it is a largely instrumental big band session divided between originals and classics that shows off his writing and arranging skills while featuring his longtime trumpeter
Leroy Jones and trombonist Lucien Barbarin on incidental vocals. (Connick is in full vocal mode on Oh, My Nola, released by his longtime A label, Columbia.)
Though his surprisingly few turns at the piano are mostly Basie-like in their edgy economy, his coloristic, sectional approach on tunes such as his own Luscious and Hoagy Carmichael's New
Orleans evokes Duke Ellington. Named for the storied old section of the French Quarter, the album takes a few songs to get going, but once it does, it has plenty of spark and swagger--and heart.
The ghostlike background voicings on Sidney Bechet's Petite Fleur seem to embody spirits of New Orleans past while it's always great to hear Connick honor his onetime mentor,
Professor Longhair, on Longhair's bumptious Mardis Gras in New Orleans. --Lloyd Sachs

Editorial Reviews

These four discs collect the material on six long plays of trios and solos that Oscar Peterson recorded in Villingen, Germany, between 1963 and 1968. On standards galore,
Peterson never lets up in his rigorous, swinging approach. He is at his prime on these recordings, as he himself noted later. The improvisations range from extraordinary to awe-inspiring.
The lyricism of Nat King Cole is in there, along with Art Tatum-esque rococoisms and Bud Powell-like attack. Which partners best complemented Peterson's girth, and bowed to it least,
is always in dispute. On six tracks here, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen lay claim against the earlier Brown-Herb Ellis unit.

IOnOne shopping | music | jazz | amazon.com | Joe Pass | Unforgettable
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The title of this recording is doubly significant. While the late guitarist's interpretation of Irving Gordon's immortal composition is certainly representative of this collection of standards, it's Joe Pass himself who must be considered unforgettable. A master of technique, Pass first gained prominence as an industrious studio musician in the early '60s. After years as a sideman with George Shearing, Benny Goodman, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others, Pass worked as a solo artist until his death in 1994. This batch of classics performed on the acoustic guitar was recorded in 1992 and displays the man's accomplished fingerpicking technique and strength as a soloist. From emotive interpretations of Autumn Leaves and Moonlight in Vermont to his bopping version of Monk's Round Midnight, this is timeless Pass. --Mitch Myers

IOnOne shopping | music | jazz | amazon.com | Charles Mingus | Passions of a Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1956-1961) [BOX SET]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Charles Mingus's Atlantic recordings represent the first full realization of his immensely original talent, pressing the boundaries to create an ever more fluent, expressive music.
While his contemporaries moved in various directions--third stream, soul, free jazz--Mingus seemed to embrace them all. His creative energy is already apparent in his first Atlantic session,
a quintet from 1956 with saxophonists Jackie McLean and J.R. Monterose. The sudden tempo shifts of Pithecanthropus Erectus introduce a new turbulence, while the programmatic sound effects of A Foggy Day stretch the sonic limits. Mingus's bass is an ever more expressive instrument as well, driving the different ensembles to greater heights, with the explosive Haitian Fight Song among the early masterpieces here.

IOnOne shopping | music | jazz | amazon.com | Chet Baker | Career: 1952-1988 [BOX SET] [LIVE]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
During his lifetime it became difficult to separate Chet Baker's music from the sad legend he became; a textbook case of psychological disconnectedness. At the beginning of his career his matinee idol looks sometimes distracted audiences from his musical gifts. Thereafter, his drug addiction overshadowed nearly every move he made, making his artistic impulses somehow suspect. This two-disc anthology sets the record straight, dividing the recordings into his trumpet playing and his singing. The former has always been justly lauded. His cool phrasing on the trumpet was always known to draw forth emotional resonance from the simplest of melodies. His talented singing is showcased in such a way to present how his voice could resonant the same emotional stirrings as his trumpet work. With his biography presented with brief but poetic insight, this set is a perfect portrait of the man. --David Greenberger

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Lady Day: The Best Of Billie Holiday is an ideal introduction to the Voice of Jazz in all its enduring glory. This incomparable collection draws on the 10-CD boxed set Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944) (CXK 85470), representing not only her finest work, but American jazz and pop singing at its zenith. Accompanied sublimely by a Who's Who of the Swing Era (including her soulmate Lester Young, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge, Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Jo Jones, and pianist-arranger Teddy Wilson, who was often at the helm when Holiday entered the studio), Billie Holiday masterfully renders a host of mostly-classic pop tunes. Fans are drawn to her musical triumphs and personal tragedies. She is a mysterious icon in the same vein as Miles Davis. Columbia possesses the first and finest recordings of her entire career! This material has never sounded clearer and more intimate!

IOnOne shopping | music | jazz | amazon.com | Benny Goodman | Benny Goodman [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
Reviewer: A music fan
This is what we needed - a comprehensive box set spanning Goodman's most creative years and including tracks from RCA and Columbia. Who else but JSP Records to take this on. Now the criticism. Like all JSP box sets it is bare bones, not much in the way of liner notes, history. No musician line up, recording dates. But that's OK we expect that from JSP and purchase recordings from them for the quality of the product.

IOnOne shopping | music | jazz | amazon.com | Art Blakey | Free for All
Amazon.com essential recording
A full decade after the Messengers were formed, Art Blakey's revolving-door unit had evolved from a funk-heavy, blues-oriented hard-bop quintet into a probing and turbulent postbop sextet that betrayed the influence
of free-leaning musicians like John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. This mentality peaked on the title track to this 1964 firecracker, the most intense and feverish recording in Messenger history, whipped forward by
Blakey's absolutely violent and vicious percussion. The hornmen--Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard (who wrote The Core), and especially Wayne Shorter (who composed both Free for All and Hammer Head)--do admirably
well just to be heard atop Blakey's frenzied polyrhythms, leaving melody behind in favor of fiery spirit and starch. And if it's not the drums doing the prodding, it's Blakey's well-timed grunts and growls of admonishment and
approval. --Marc Greilsamer
