Microsoft Launches Ignition Program
to Help Recording Artists Reach an Audience of Millions of Zune, MSN and Xbox Fans
New promotional program presents artists to a combined audience of more than 30 million consumers, who will benefit from discovering new music.
REDMOND, Wash. -- June 4, 2007 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced the launch of Ignition, a new program that gives recording artists with new releases a unique channel to reach tens of millions of consumers, whether they are browsing music online, playing games or catching up on the latest news. For the first time, Microsoft has packaged promotional opportunities across Zune(TM), Xbox® and MSN® to help artists more efficiently reach consumers in all three audiences.
In a world where high-impact promotional opportunities for new music can be limited, artists look for ways to make direct connections with their audience and leave a lasting impression. Ignition maximizes exposure for artists by engaging consumers with interesting content and reaching them frequently over a monthlong period through prominent placement on Zune Marketplace, Zune.net, MSN entertainment properties and the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. For consumers, Ignition provides a steady stream of new music through online access to exclusive content, free song and video downloads, streaming video, editorial features, and artist playlists.
"The Ignition program is designed to help artists connect with a substantial consumer audience," said Christina Calio, director of Music Marketing for Zune. "Consumers are looking for ways to find new music, and Ignition helps connect artists with potential new fans by giving them multiple opportunities to listen to, watch or read about the artist across Microsoft's online platforms."
The Ignition program launches with the U.K. band Maxïmo Park (Warp Records/Caroline Distribution), whose current album, "Our Earthly Pleasures," debuted at No. 2 on the U.K. charts in April and is receiving significant radio airplay for its single "Girls Who Play Guitars." Throughout the month of June, Ignition will introduce new U.S. fans to this popular U.K. band through free and exclusive music downloads and features on Zune Marketplace and Zune.net, video downloads on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and promotional video and music streams on MSN Video and MSN Music. Specific Maxïmo Park promotions include the following:
Zune Marketplace and Zune.net
"Our Velocity" featured as a free download on Zune Marketplace
"Don McPhee" offered to U.S. audiences as an exclusive track for two weeks on Zune Marketplace
Playlist of 10 favorite tracks from Maxïmo Park lead singer Paul Smith available for download on Zune Marketplace
Maxïmo Park's personal commentary on "Our Earthly Pleasures," featuring song-by-song descriptions and comments
Maxïmo Park-specific page on Zune.net promoting the band's current activities
Xbox LIVE Marketplace
Promotional video download of "Our Velocity" offered at no cost to Xbox LIVE subscribers
MSN Entertainment
Promotional video stream of "Our Velocity" on MSN Video
Listening parties for "Our Earthly Pleasures" during the first two weeks of June on MSN Music, which will allow consumers to listen to the entire album via streaming audio for free
"We're excited to have Maxïmo Park be the first artist taking part in Microsoft's Ignition program," said Priyanka Dewan, product manager at Warp Records. "When you're a band that is attempting to move to the next level of success, opportunities like this to connect with a significant audience are important. The simultaneous promotion across Zune, MSN and Xbox is great exposure for the band."
The launch of Ignition adds a powerful new element to existing Zune music programs such as "On the Road," which has been providing
financial and tactical support for touring artists that include CSS, LCD Soundsystem, Ladytron and MIMS, as well as "Artist of the Week,"
which provides a weekly spotlight of one major artist release in Zune Marketplace

New Spinal Tap film from Rob Reiner at LiveEarth.msn.com
New York – The new Spinal Tap film directed by Rob Reiner that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival is available at LiveEarth.MSN.com. Reiner also announced at the festival that Spinal Tap has reunited and will play Live Earth's London Show on 7/7/07.
The 15-minute film chronicles Marty DeBergi's (Rob Reiner) efforts to reunite Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael
McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) to play Live Earth. The film also reveals what the band members have been up to since they were last together. Ferrets, tiny horses, rehab and hip hop play prominent roles.
Please see the clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxSvF8iNEPg and the entire film at LiveEarth.MSN.com.
Live Earth is designed to trigger a mass movement to combat our climate crisis.
On 7/7/07, Live Earth will be a defining musical event with more than 100 headliners performing live on all 7 continents and being broadcast globally through television, radio, web, wireless and other media platforms. These music artists will inspire an audience of more than 2 billion people worldwide to make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives to turn the tide on global warming.
Live Earth's proceeds and the audience it engages will be the launch for an ongoing campaign to combat the climate crisis that will be led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is chaired by Al Gore, and international environmental NGOs.
Live Earth will provide simple actions and tools that, if applied on a mass scale, will have a massive impact on combating the climate crisis. A global movement of people making meaningful changes in their lives will give the companies they do business with, and the governments who represent them, no choice but to enact positive long-term themselves.
Live Earth was founded by Kevin Wall – the Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8, which brought together one of the largest audiences in history to combat poverty. Wall formed a partnership with Al Gore and the Alliance to ensure that Live Earth inspires behavioral changes long after 7/7/07.
Live Earth will stage concerts at Giants Stadium in New Jersey; Wembley Stadium in London; Aussie Stadium in Sydney; Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro; The Cradle of Human Kind in Johannesburg; Tokyo Dome in Tokyo; and a to be determined venue in Shanghai.
Live Earth will be broadcast to a live worldwide audience by MSN at www.LiveEarth.MSN.com and in the U.S. on NBC, Premiere Radio networks, XM and Sirius.
Live Earth is a project of the SOS campaign, which is a variety of media platforms – films, television, radio, Internet, books, wireless and others – to move people to combat the climate crisis.

Architectural video by Wika for Knoll International
Paris, April 2, 2007 - This April, we are transforming St. Germain. WA is a site-specific video installation created for
Knoll International by Gabriel Winer and Dana Karwas. Large-scale architectural projections turn the existing seventeenth century facade into a drive-by cinema and pedestrian spectacle. Playing with a unique two-screen format, the movie re-imagines the story of the company’s founders, how they discovered a minimalist approach to design, and came together to create the modernist symbol that Knoll is today. The two videos are synchronized to play with, and against, each other, or as a single vertical image, creating a captivating dialogue between the characters on screen, the architecture of the building, the street, and the viewers. State-of-the-art projection material is used to implant the images onto the skin of the building and live editing software (developed by WIKA) remixes certain scenes, creating a fresh version of the movie each time it plays. These various elements come together to tell the story of Knoll the way it should be told, through time and urban scale.
The movie was shot on-location by WIKA in
New York City. The installation is part of an event at
Knoll International France designed and overseen by Stéfan Golinski to promote a new line of Knoll furniture designed by Piero Lissoni and Mark Krusin.
