Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of Pharaohs
Los Angeles–Marking the first time the treasures of Tutankhamun (King Tut) have visited Los Angeles in 27 years, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs from June 16, 2005 through November 15, 2005. The extensive exhibition includes more than 130 treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, other Valley of the Kings tombs and additional ancient sites. LACMA is the first United States venue for a 27-month national tour.
The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun- the most spectacular royal tomb ever found- is one of the most famous events in the history of archaeology. The treasures of this tomb surpass all others, and the fifty Tutankhamun artifacts featured in this book illustrate many uses of gold and other precious materials in ancient Egypt, giving us a glimpse into the extraordinary richness of this ancient civilization. The book also includes never-before-seen images of the full-body forensic recreation of the boy king. How did Tut really look and what caused his untimely death? Cutting edge CT scan data provides tantalizing clues. In addition artifacts from the period preceding the reign of Tutankhamun will be featured, illuminating this fascinating era of Egyptian history and setting the stage for the treasures of Tut. These pieces will illustrate the history of the 18th dynasty, daily life under the golden pharaohs, and the journeys of both kings and commoners to the afterlife, and will include pieces dating to the reigns of four 18th dynasty pharaohs, the direct ancestors of Tutankhamun: Amenhotep II and Tuthmosis IV These two great warrior kings ruled in the mid-18th Dynasty, and solidified the great Egyptian empire built by their predecessors. Although their tombs had both been robbed in antiquity, many fascinating pieces were left behind by the thieves. The tomb of Amenhotep II was reused just after the end of the New Kingdom as a cache for a group of royal mummies. Amenhotep III and Akhenaten A number of pieces come from the Theban area, where the great temple of Amun stood, the site of many great discoveries, and Amarna, where Akhenaten built a new capital city. Other artifacts come from one of the rare private tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the burial of Amenhotep III's parents-in-law, Yuya and Tjuya. [ read more ] >>

Urban Vision-METROPOLIS
198 Gallery in Brixton showcases the work of the young people who have taken part in the Urban Vision digital media arts education programme.
198 Gallery is proud to cement its position as a key contributor to both the wider community and the London art scene. Since its creation, in 1988, after the Brixton riots, 198 Gallery has been at the leading edge of creative education in Lambeth. Designed to provide young people aged 13-19 with access to new media technology, Urban Vision is 198 Gallery’s unique new media arts programme addressing young peoples creative needs. The Urban Vision - Metropolis exhibition gives talented budding graphic designers, photographers and illustrators an opportunity to exhibit their innovative work and celebrates the integration of the urban lifestyle to the UK culture. This year, the Urban Vision – Metropolis exhibition includes artworks created in partnership with the Youth Advocate Programme (ISSP) Digital Expressions (YAP) and the Lambeth Youth Offending Team. The exhibition is presenting pieces that have been produced through the new ‘Pix and Mix’ programme in Graphics, Photography, and Illustration. It will also include video projects such as the Africa Remix film ‘Brixton Bytes’, in collaboration with Digital Extensions-Hayward Galley. This show is the young people’s response to the urban sprawl expressed through photography and Graphic Art. They are the new lifeblood of the British Art scene and this will be their debut.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates, Central Park, NY
On January 22, 2003 Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, announced that the city has given permission to New York artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude to realize their temporary work of art:The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005. The 7500 Gates, 16 feet (4.87 meters) high with a width varying from 5' 6" to 18 feet (1,67 m to 5,48 meters) will follow the edges of the walkways and will be perpendicular to the selected 23 miles of footpaths in Central Park. Free hanging saffron colored fabric panels suspended from the horizontal top part of the gates will come down to approximately 7 feet ( 2,13 meters) above the ground. The gates will be spaced at 12 foot (3,65 meter) intervals, except where low branches extend above the walkways allowing the synthetic woven panels to wave horizontally towards the next gate and be seen from far away through the leafless branches of the trees. The temporary work of art The Gates is scheduled for February 2005, to remain for 16 days, then the 7,500 Gates shall be removed and the materials will be recycled. [ ... ] On Monday, February 7, 2005, weather permitting, approximately 700 non-skilled workers (in teams of 7) will elevate The Gates assemblies -- 2 vertical and one horizontal pole, the upper and lower aluminum corners and base assembly and the fabric panel in a cocoon, attached to the upper horizontal pole. The fabric panels will not initially be seen because they will be restrained in the cocoons which will remain closed until Saturday, February 12, when all the cocoons will be opened, in one day (maybe in one morning), weather permitting, as with all our projects. The Gates will remain in Central park for 16 days, then the removal will start.
