In my opinion the world is collage of build myths in order to refill the own group wise experience of time, place, emotions like love and so on. Each built; planned, created, grown etc. structure is a statue of group wise value. When I think about art I realize that's it's a tool to break down this values by telling your own values upon what is. In my artistic act I use personal interests that could be found in form, line and concept. A lot of my passion is driven by art history itself since I believe that the biggest way of the human creation in the artistic act is to re definte the history of art and it's towers by re inventing it from the now a days eye. You could say it has some to do with archetypes because they also change itself to gain a role in time. I'm not sure about those, but since there is so much history to gather and to carry out its almost like some kind of a hunting for personality. The beauty of the actual creation is hidden in it's position, it can relate to the Greek old culture and next moment in can feel as free as a decadent soul in NY, without losing its handwritten regonizeble to artist related point of view. When it comes to tittles I like to travel and give the work names, like 42nd street, Beijing, Cairo, Havana etc. Mostly because for some reason I indentify the work with that place aldo I haven't been there neither saw any picture of it, but it feels as if it's there. I hope that visiters on one of my shows or this website can relate to those places too. Personality's I like to are servants, guards, in general people that are protecting or serving something. The dandy is important to act as a now a days clown that actually feels sad because he's to old to be clown. In some ways I can relate them to myself, but since I don't like it when it's not readable by others because it's to personal I chooice characters that fit to me while they still keep their own appearance.

biography

Jean-Paul Opperman (Netherlands, 1980)
At the age of 14 I went to a school for graphic techniques. Mostly because it was the only solution on that age to have some kind of schooling which included drawing and little artistic development. When I was 16 I started to paint and in 1998 I went to a school for graphic design. After 2 years I quitted because I got more and more involved with the creating of art instead of graphical design related things so I went to a Academy of arts (Rietveld Academie) in 2000. The dutch newspaper wrote a small piece about me in an article on the entrance examinations that year. Not really flattering but it's fun, so I place it down this page. At artschool I mostly developed myself into the direction of installation art. My concepts where based on African and Oceanic rituals and the question how to relate this to our society (Graduated 2005). Around October 2005 I started to do some sketches. My main issue on this was to find a more lyrical human like solution for my installations. April last year I started to paint again. The idea to use my drawings as a sketch for 3d I gave up, since drawing worked even better than 3d on me. The work itself is expressive which is thing I kept from my interest in rituals and other cultures.
